POKOTABI / Yabu Soba
薮そば
Located on Takatsuji-dori Inokuma in Shimogyo Ward, Yabu Soba features vivid green cha-soba, spicy curry ankake broth, crisp tempura, and comforting rice bowls like oyakodon.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Dip the emerald-green strands into the slightly sweet sauce, and the subtle aroma of green tea gently unfolds. Set along Takatsuji Inokuma-cho in Shimogyo Ward, Yabu Soba is a tranquil noodle shop that retains the nostalgic charm of a traditional Kyoto machiya townhouse. The cha-soba (green tea-infused buckwheat noodles) possesses a firm, satisfying bite, showing its character equally well served chilled as classic zaru soba with sharp dipping sauce, or immersed in hot broth and warm dipping soups.
Among the hot noodle selections, curry soba blanketed in a thick ankake sauce commands a devoted following. The spicy kick combined with rich dashi broth clings generously to the green tea noodles, and for hungrier appetites, the "Niku Oshi Curry" offers a reassuringly hearty serving with extra meat. Stirring plain white rice into the remaining sauce to savor every last bite is a quintessential, unpretentious pleasure of local noodle shops. When in need of deep, lingering warmth, choices like kamo nanba—where thick cuts of duck enrich the broth—and kamo seiro with warm dipping soup are equally tempting.
Crisp tempura fried lightly in delicate batter accompanies the tenzaru soba and side-order tempura plates, offering fragrant crunch alongside smooth, cooling noodles. For a heartier meal, richly seasoned rice bowls such as oyakodon (chicken and egg) and tentojidon (tempura bound with egg) pair wonderfully with a small bowl of "wan soba." Together with substantial rice balls and dishes like chuuka-style "ki-soba" yellow noodles, the menu provides an approachable variety tailored to everyday lunches.
The dining room maintains a calm, welcoming atmosphere that makes solo dining effortless. Note that payment is strictly cash only. Whether you prefer a traditional chilled zaru, a warming bowl of ankake noodles, or a generous rice bowl set, you can easily tailor your order to your mood and appetite.
